Saturday 10 October 7.30pm
at The Council Chamber, Uttlesford District Council Offices,
London Road, Saffron Walden
There's a rare opportunity on Saturday 10th October to hear the excellent local chamber choir Granta Chorale in the beautiful, circular council chamber in the UDC Council Offices, Saffron Walden. With its modern oak panelling and high domed ceiling, this room has the perfect acoustic and intimate atmosphere in which to experience Granta Chorale in Time Becomes a Song, a varied programme of music from Monteverdi to Moon River.
This event supports Cancer Research UK and the Down’s Syndrome Association, the two chosen charities of Stephanie Harris, this year’s Chairman of Uttlesford District Council. The concert starts at 7.30pm and runs for about an hour with no interval, after which audience and choir can mingle over a relaxed drink.
The title work Time Becomes a Song by choir's director Janet Wheeler is a cycle of five choral settings of John Clare. These move from a popular waltz song about a ladybird to an impassioned choral cry for Clare's lost love, then via two melodic love songs to a fleet-footed finale - an intricate picture of Little Trotty Wagtail. The music is melodic and accessible yet with touches of surprise and innovation.
Elsewhere the programme evokes the colours and moods of Autumn as summer passes and the nights begin to draw in. In two beautifully heartfelt madrigals by Monteverdi and Wilbye, the sleepless, lovesick poet sings his suffering to the night. Evocative folksong arrangements join exciting contemporary pieces by American composer Eric Whitacre, Finnish composer Jaako Mäntyjärvi and British composers Alan Bullard and Alexander Campkin. Close harmony numbers such as Autumn Leaves, Night and Day and Blue Moon are interspersed with more familiar classics and Shakespeare settings also put in an appearance in advance of the bard's 400th anniversary.
We look forward to the pleasure of your company.
